Breath is Life

Breath is Life.  The involuntary, vital function that takes us from each moment to the next.  A function most of us hardly acknowledge with our conscious minds.  That is, until we are forced to bring our attention to breathing; through exercise, emotional stress, a stuffy cold, or for some of us an asthma attack.

I experienced my first asthma attack playing a high school summer basketball game in the dry Eastern Oregon mountains.  Unable to catch my breath, I spiraled into a panic and it forced me off the court.  At first I thought it was must be the conditions of the gym and thin mountain air.  However, the attacks continued for weeks during any strenuous exercise.  I was diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma and prescribed Albuterol, a rescue inhaler I would use before exercising and anytime I found myself short of breath.  I had a prescription for Albuterol for 15 years.  Within 10 minutes of using the inhaler, my heart would race, my hands would tremble, and a dry cough would linger for hours.  The side effects made it difficult to use, but then benefit of breathing well during exercise was necessary.

Asthma can be triggered by a laundry list of conditions including air pollution, food allergies, acid reflux, stress, certain medications including ibuprofen and beta blockers, respiratory infections, etc. There is no documented cure for asthma.  It is a chronic condition that we are told by experts must be managed rather than cured.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) nearly 25 million Americans suffer from asthma, costing Americans nearly $18 billion annually.  Steroids, anti-inflammatory drugs, and bronchodilators are prescribed by doctors to manage asthma symptoms. All of these medications have side effects, and are prone to overuse.

Though pharmaceutical drugs can be life-saving, we do have natural options available for managing asthma.  I can confidently say I have not used my Albuterol inhaler in over 1 year since I initially tried doTERRA® Breathe essential oil blend.  Breathe® is a “proprietary essential oil blend including laurel leaf, peppermint, eucalyptus, melaleuca, lemon, and ravensara.  It cleanses and soothes the airways, and can easily be applied topically to the chest, back, or bottom of feet. Its pleasant aroma is calming to the senses and perfect for nighttime diffusion allowing for restful sleep.”

I apply 2-3 drops of Breathe oil to my hands, rub together, cup over my mouth, and take a few deep breaths through my nose and mouth.  I feel immediate relief and can breathe easy for hoursI also apply 1-2 drops to my chest and along my sinus passages for long-lasting relief during exercise and anytime I feel congested.  There are no side effects; shaky hands, racing heart, and dry cough are non-existent.  Breathe® provides fast, simple, natural relief.  Just as nature intended – so we can all live from moment to moment breathing easy.
